Kentucky’s medical marijuana program continues to move forward as Centaurus Farms, the state’s first licensed medical marijuana cultivation facility, is now officially under construction in Monticello. This groundbreaking development marks a significant milestone for Kentucky’s medical marijuana landscape, signaling that patients will soon have access to locally grown, regulated marijuana products designed to help those suffering from qualifying conditions.
While dispensaries remain in the works and have yet to open, progress on cultivation facilities is a great sign. Patients can already take the first steps toward legally accessing medical marijuana by securing their medical marijuana cards today, ensuring they can access marijuana dispensaries as soon as they open their doors.
Centaurus Farms Begins Construction
In a historic moment for Kentucky, Centaurus Farms broke ground on its cultivation facility in Monticello, with key figures such as Monticello Mayor Kenny Catron and Office of Medical Cannabis Director Sam Flynn in attendance. This project stems from Kentucky’s medical marijuana license lottery, which awarded the first round of business licenses after the state's medical marijuana program officially launched on January 1st.
"This is the first groundbreaking from that medical marijuana initiative since the bill has been passed." said Rocky Adkins, senior advisor to Governor Andy Beshear.
The facility will serve as a Tier II cultivation center, meaning it can grow marijuana on a substantial scale to meet the needs of Kentucky’s expanding patient population. Production is expected to begin soon, paving the way for dispensaries to open and for patients to purchase safe, tested products.

Why Medical Marijuana Is the Right Choice for Kentuckians
Kentucky’s medical marijuana program was established with one clear goal: to provide a safer alternative to addictive opioids and other pharmaceuticals. With Senate Bill 47, signed into law by Governor Andy Beshear in March 2023, the state committed to helping those suffering from chronic conditions find relief without relying on harmful medications.
The regulated nature of Kentucky’s program ensures that all marijuana products are tested for safety, potency, and quality, giving patients peace of mind that they’re receiving effective treatment. Unlike the black market or unregulated sources, Kentucky’s licensed cultivators and dispensaries will be committed to providing products that meet strict health and safety standards.
By securing your medical marijuana card, you’re not only complying with the law but also accessing the professional medical guidance necessary to use marijuana safely and effectively for your condition once dispensaries open.
Dispensaries Are Coming Soon, So Be Prepared
Although dispensaries haven’t opened their doors just yet, production at facilities like Centaurus Farms is slated to kick off soon, meaning Kentucky patients will see medical cannabis products filling dispensary shelves sooner than later. The state’s licensing process has been highly competitive, with 77 business licenses distributed and over 2,000 medical marijuana cards already approved by the Office of Medical Cannabis.
Monticello is now stepping proudly into the legal market. With Centaurus Farms breaking ground, Monticello is poised to become a key player in Kentucky’s emerging medical marijuana industry.
The cultivation facility is expected to create up to 100 local jobs, offering an average salary of $62,500 per year, giving Wayne County’s economy a healthy boost. This move not only supports patients across the state but also strengthens Kentucky’s communities through new opportunities and growth.
