As of January 1, 2025, Kentucky’s medical marijuana program is active, and will soon provide patients with qualifying medical conditions access to medical marijuana. Despite this statewide legalization, institutions like the University of Kentucky in Lexington and the University of Louisville have maintained prohibitions against the possession and use of marijuana on their campuses.
This policy is primarily due to federal regulations, as marijuana remains classified as a Schedule I substance under federal law. Universities receiving federal funding are required to comply with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, which mandates the prohibition of illicit drugs on campus.
Understanding Kentucky's Medical Marijuana Program
Kentucky's medical marijuana program allows patients diagnosed with specific qualifying conditions to obtain a medical marijuana card. Qualifying conditions include cancer, chronic severe pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, chronic nausea, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Medical card holders can possess up to eight ounces of marijuana.
To participate, patients must consult with an authorized medical practitioner to receive a written certification. That’s where we come in! After this, they can apply for a medical marijuana card through the state's program. As of now, dispensaries are not yet operational, but patients can be seen at either of our medical offices in Louisville or Lexington.

This means that even if a student possesses a valid medical marijuana card, they are not permitted to possess or use marijuana on campus.
