How to Qualify for a Medical Marijuana Card in Kentucky
To qualify for a Kentucky medical marijuana card and legally purchase medical marijuana from a dispensary, you must fulfill the following qualifications:

Be diagnosed with a condition that a physician deems fit for medical marijuana treatment

Have an official written certification from a Kentucky medical marijuana physician

Be a Kentucky resident with proof of residency (KY Driver’s License or KY State ID card)

Be 18 years old or older
For minor patients, the custodial parent or legal guardian with responsibility for health care decisions for the qualified patient must serve as the designated caregiver for the minor patient.

How to Get a Kentucky Medical Marijuana Recommendation
If you have previously been diagnosed with one of the common qualifying conditions or believe you currently suffer from one, you will most likely be eligible for a Kentucky medical marijuana recommendation once the program launches in 2025. The first step would be to find a compassionate doctor who will review your condition(s) and if appropriate, recommend marijuana as part of your treatment plan. And that's where we come in to help!
You will need to schedule an evaluation appointment, where you and your medical marijuana doctor will discuss your condition as well as your medical history. If you have medical records available, they will allow the doctor to better assess your condition(s) and can increase the likelihood of receiving a recommendation from the doctor. If you are having a hard time getting your medical records, we are here to help! Our medical records team will be able to help you obtain your medical records before your appointment.
If your Kentucky medical marijuana doctor can confirm your condition(s) and believes medical marijuana is an appropriate treatment option, you will receive a signed certification recommending medical marijuana as part of your treatment plan. Then, you'll submit your application with the state through the patient and caregiver registry portal. Within 30 days of receiving your completed application, the Cabinet will approve you and provide your digital registry ID card which can be printed or saved on your mobile device.
What Information Is Required When a Patient Applies for a Medical Marijuana ID Card With the State?
Kentucky's medical marijuana program will launch in January 2025! People across the State of Kentucky are actively exploring how they can become a patients and obtain their medical marijuana. To obtain a medical marijuana recommendation, patients will have to find a physician licensed by the state of Kentucky, schedule an evaluation, and be identified as having one or more of the qualifying conditions to receive a recommendation. Then, they will have to apply with the state and pay any application fees to receive their official certification.

Am I Guaranteed to Get Approved for Medical Marijuana After Visiting Your Office in Kentucky?
We won't be able to guarantee approval for anyone, because the Kentucky marijuana doctor is the only person who will determine whether or not a patient qualifies. To increase the chances that you receive approval from the doctor, we recommend that you bring as much information as possible regarding your medical condition(s) and past treatments.

Effective Treatment
If you currently suffer from one or more qualifying conditions, we strongly suggest that you initiate treatment under the supervision of a physician who has training in the field and a passion for the medicinal qualities inherent in cannabis. At Kentucky Marijuana Card, all of our doctors are licensed under the state of Kentucky and they take additional medical cannabis education courses ensuring they have critical and recent information related to the therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana.
Dispensary Access
Once available in 2025, medical marijuana products should be purchased from a Kentucky licensed dispensary. With your Kentucky medical marijuana card in hand, you'll be able to access all Kentucky cannabis dispensaries. These state-licensed marijuana dispensaries will carry many forms of medical marijuana in varying strengths, and you will be able to buy products such as tinctures, oils, creams, plant material for vaporizers, and edibles.
Confused About Kentucky's Marijuana Program?
Kentucky’s medical marijuana program can be confusing with the previous Executive Order in place, especially for our current patients. The certifications we’ve provided under the Executive Order allow qualified patients to avoid prosecution for possession, but they are not medical marijuana cards.
In November, we’ll begin in-person appointments for medical marijuana cards, giving patients full access to dispensaries when the program launches in January. If you are a past patient of ours, you’ll need to book a new appointment for a medical marijuana card at our Louisville or Lexington office.
How to Qualify for a Medical Marijuana Pardon in Kentucky
The Executive Order is “conditional.” The Executive Order only grants a gubernatorial pardon to a resident of Kentucky“if and only if all of the following conditions are satisfied”:

The medical cannabis was lawfully purchased in a US jurisdiction outside of Kentucky.

The individual produces a written proof of purchase showing the date, place, and physical location of the place of purchase.

The amount of medical cannabis was legal in the jurisdiction of purchase and does not exceed 8 ounces.

The individual produces a written certification by a licensed healthcare provider that they have been diagnosed with a specified medical condition. That's where we come in!

To qualify for a pardon under the Executive Order, you must have one of the following qualifying conditions along with the other requirements listed above:
