Does Severe Nausea Quality for Medical Marijuana in Kentucky?

Severe nausea can be caused by treatments or medications for condition or it can be a direct symptom of a disease. Both of these types of severe nausea can qualify you for medical marijuana in Kentucky. Because severe nausea is caused by a variety of conditions, it is hard to pin down exactly how many people are suffering from it. One of the most severe types of nausea is chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), which is estimated to occur in up to 80% of cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy.

How Does Medical Marijuana Help Severe Nausea?

Synthetic cannabinoid medications are a common treatment for severe nausea, particularly in those with chemotherapy-induced nausea. However, natural cannabis has also shown promise for helping relieve nausea and vomiting. According to the National Cancer Institute, inhaled Cannabis was more effective than placebo in reducing nausea in cancer patients receiving high-dose methotrexate.

Medical marijuana is thought to help with severe nausea largely thanks to the antiemetic effects of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. Phytocannabinoids like THC interact with a system in our bodies termed the endocannabinoid system (ECS). With ECS receptors found across emetic pathways in our bodies, interaction with these receptors by THC may help to improve nausea and reduce vomiting.

Medical marijuana may provide symptomatic relief if you experience severe nausea caused by any of the following conditions or their treatments:

  • Anorexia

  • Anxiety conditions

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Cancer

  • Crohn’s disease

  • Irritable bowel disease

  • Head trauma

  • Hepatitis C

  • HIV/AIDS

  • Migraines

  • Pancreatitis

  • Vertigo conditions

This is of course only a partial list of conditions for which medical marijuana could help with severe nausea.

What Is Severe Nausea?

Most people are familiar with nausea: an unsettling feeling in the stomach that is often accompanied by the sensation that one might vomit. While nausea is not generally considered as a medical condition itself, it often considered a symptom of something else that is happening in the body. Nausea can often be accompanied by a lack of appetite, regurgitation, vomiting, and abdominal pain or discomfort.

There are two main types of nausea - acute or chronic. Acute nausea might be caused by a condition that comes on suddenly, which can originate from a number of common causes:

  • A virus, such as gastroenteritis or the "stomach flu"

  • Food poisoning

  • Car (motion) sickness

  • Extreme pain

  • Hangover

  • Medication side effects

  • Migraine

  • Overeating

  • Stress

  • Trauma, such as a concussion

Comparatively, chronic nausea occurs when the feelings of nausea are present all the time, or come and go often. Some of the more commonly associated medical conditions include:

  • Pregnancy

  • Gallstones

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

  • Migraines

  • Peptic ulcer

  • Central nervous system disorders

  • Hepatitis

  • Hiatal hernia

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

  • Instestinal obstruction

  • Pancreatitis

Chronic Idiopathic Nausea refers to nausea that does not have a physical reason for occurring. This doesn't mean that there isn't a cause, but rather there does not seem to be an identifiable underlying cause for the nausea.

If you experience nausea regularly, this would most likely qualify you for medical marijuana treatment in Kentucky. Schedule an appointment with a certified medical marijuana doctor at Kentucky Marijuana Card to discuss how medical cannabis can help your nausea symptoms.
